What is a WAN?

What is a WAN router?

A wide area network (also known as WAN), is a large network of information that is not tied to a single location. WANs can facilitate communication, the sharing of information, and much more between devices from around the world through a WAN provider.

WANs can be vital for international businesses, but they are also essential for everyday use, as the internet is considered the largest WAN in the world. Keep reading for more information on WANs, their use, how they differ from other networks, and their overall purpose for businesses and people, alike.

What is a WAN router?

A WAN router, also known as an edge router or border router is a device that routes data packets between WAN locations, giving enterprise access to a carrier network.  Several WAN protocols have been developed over time, including Packet over SONET/SDH (PoS), Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS), ATM, and Frame Relay.

Types of WAN Topology

WANs interconnect different networks over long distances. Various network topologies used to build a WAN network. The main topologies used on WANs are given below:
    • Point-to-Point Topology
    • Hub and Spoke Topology
    • Full Mesh Topology
    • Dual-Homed Topology
